What Type of Soil Do Calathea & Maranta Like?

In nature, Calathea and Maranta plants sprawl along rainforest floors where it's warm and humid and where they only have little sunlight. It can be tricky to recreate such conditions at home, but with our water-retaining calathea maranta mix this becomes less of a challenge.

Water-retention properties: 

Moisture-loving plants will show an immediate reaction to insufficient hydration. Ingredients like lava, zeolite, and vermiculite ensure the soil remains moist, absorbing excess water and gradually releasing it as the soil begins to dry.

Airy and light composition: 

Even though Calatheas and Marantas love moisture, they are also susceptible to root rot. It is easy to misjudge their watering needs because these plants are sensitive to a lot of factors such as temperature, humidity level and drafts, with over- or underwatering them as a result. Our calathea potting mix combines ingredients such as pumice and activated charcoal to promote efficient drainage, reducing the chances of root rot.

Bioactive nutrient source: 

By pre-treating coco coir, our base component, we ensure that every nutrient added to the pot is readily available for your plant's absorption. With worm castings rich with beneficial bacteria and fungi, and an added boost of vital soil microorganisms like Bacillus sp., Actinomycetes, Azotobacter and others, your plants gain a strong defense against stress and diseases. We also add Mycorrhizae into the mix – a fungi that creates a symbiotic relationship with your plant's roots, greatly improving water and nutrient uptake. Zeolite's ability to lock in and gradually release nutrients, ensures that your plant has enough nutrients for one month after repotting.
