Most commercial potting soils use peat as a base component. A massive amount of CO2 is released during the extraction of peat from peat bogs. In Belgium alone, thousands of tonnes of peat based potting soils are used yearly, impacting our carbon footprint significantly.
A 40L bag of standard peat-based soil:
- Takes about 80 years to form in peat bogs
- Releases about 10 kg of CO2 during the extraction process. The equivalent of an average passenger car driving 75 km.
