Activated charcoal is very light and has an extremely porous structure which makes it a perfect additive to improve drainage and airflow in your potting mix. In addition, activated charcoal absorbs toxins and impurities from the soil, which is an added benefit for a potting mix and an absolute necessity for plants in a closed environment, such as a terrarium. Activated charcoal increases the pH level of the soil however, so keep the pH requirements of your plants in mind.

Perlite requires a significant amount of energy to produce. We choose pumice, which is more sustainable and does not rise to the top of the pot.
